If ever there were a business person I wish I could emulate in kindness, professionalism and grace, it would be Renea Feagin of Baked Expressions. We popped into her life by way of our KC heart piñata. Renea graciously talked with us, gave us some very useful tips about the KC wedding market and some very sound business guidance. She is so enlightening and one of the nicest people we have met since moving to KC. If that wasn't enough, we even were surprised with a tasting of her delicious-delicious-delicious cakes (yes that’s 3x’s deliciousness I could fill the page with them, not an exaggeration)! Who better to kick off our inaugural edition of Behind the Business; featuring our most talented friends in the wedding industry, than with Renea Feagin.
I met with Renea again while photographing her work at her Mission, Kansas-based kitchen/showplace. We talked for a long time; I got to photograph some of her most beautiful creations. Not only are her cakes delicious but they are absolutely gorgeous. It takes skill, time and love to accomplish what Renea does so beautifully. We hope you enjoy getting to know Renea as much as we have, she is a delight!
- Who or what is your inspiration? Everywhere, building upon what catches my eye, simplicity and elegance. A love of sparkle, bling all things pretty brought me to wedding cakes.
- Do you like to eat cake? Yes, I like rich cakes. Pound Cake and Cheesecake are some of my personal favorites to eat.
- What is your most popular cake flavor combination? Without question the Apple Cake with Caramel frosting. (Sidenote: We got to taste this and it’s a plate cleaner – outrageously delicious – not a morsel remaining!!!) Another surprising yet fantastic combination that was created for a groom is a Banana/Honey/Jack Daniels combination.
- What has been a challenging yet rewarding cake design for you? All cakes are rewarding when standing tall and completed! The Spoon texture is a standout and is among my favorites for on trend cakes.
- What is the longest distance you have traveled to deliver a cake? 3 Hours to Wichita, KS.
A huge THANK YOU to Renea for being an amazing person and a gifted baker. We appreciate our time together more than simple words can express and hope to work with you soon!
